How Long Will My Cosmetic Dentistry Treatment Last?

Investing in your smile with the help of cosmetic dentistry treatment can be a big expense, but one that will pay dividends with improved confidence and self-esteem. But before you make the final decision, it’s important to know what you’ll be getting for your money. Namely, how long you can expect your results to last. Here’s a closer look at five popular cosmetic dentistry treatments, and their expected lifespan with proper care.

Veneers

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that fit over your teeth to transform their shape, size, color, and spacing instantly. Because this treatment requires your dentist to remove a small amount of enamel from each tooth receiving a veneer, the procedure is considered irreversible; however, the veneers themselves will need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear after about 15 to 20 years.

Metal-Free Dental Crowns

Metal-free dental crowns are just as durable and long-lasting as their predecessors, but because they’re made of natural-looking composite resin they can be color matched to your exact tooth shade, so they blend in with your smile seamlessly.  With proper care and maintenance, you can expect your new crown to last ten or more years.

Cosmetic Dental Bonding

Cosmetic dental bonding can repair a variety of dental damage, from chips to discoloration and even minor gaps between teeth. This treatment uses the same durable, lifelike composite resin your dentist uses in tooth-colored fillings to rebuild your smile so nobody will know it was ever damaged.  Cosmetic dental bonding can be done in just one appointment, and is completely painless, too. In most cases, your repairs will last about five years with proper hygiene and care.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening from your dentist is the fastest and most effective way to safely remove up to eight shades of discoloration from your smile. With in-office treatments, this can be done in about an hour, or in about two weeks with a professional take-home kit. While teeth whitening does get stunning results as soon as possible, please be aware that your teeth can become re-stained. Thus, be sure to eat a “white” diet for the first few days after treatment (dairy, applesauce, chicken, potatoes) and avoid heavily pigmented foods, smoking, and dark beverages when possible. Furthermore, be sure to brush and floss regularly. Most whitening lasts up to a year, but your dentist can easily re-treat them every six months or so as necessary.

Gum Recontouring

Do you have a “gummy” smile or teeth that look short or stubby? While your dentist can’t make your teeth magically grow longer, gum recontouring can remove some of that excess periodontal tissue at the base of the teeth to reveal more natural structure and make your smile appear broader. Gum recontouring is a permanent procedure, and the gums will not grow back. However, to keep them safe and healthy, it is important to maintain excellent oral hygiene including regular flossing.

Remember, while most cosmetic dentistry treatments won’t last forever, they can still provide many years of beautiful, healthy smiles when properly cared for. To learn more about which cosmetic treatments are right for your gorgeous grin, schedule a consultation with your dentist today.
