Who's a Good Candidate for Dentures?

Dentures can be a good choice for someone who has lost multiple teeth or all of the teeth in their upper or lower arch. If that’s the case for you, then don’t waste any time calling our office! Once your consultation is on the calendar, you’ll be a big step closer to having a complete and confident smile again.

Effects of Missing Teeth

Simply put, missing teeth have to be replaced quickly if you want to avoid:

  • Low Self-Esteem – Whether you’re missing several teeth in an arch or an entire row, you may have trouble looking and feeling your best.
  • Dental Drift – If the teeth surrounding the gap drift out of alignment, several issues can arise, including premature wear and chronic jaw pain.
  • A Restricted Diet – Following tooth loss, you may have to resort to eating plain yogurt, applesauce, and other soft foods on repeat.
  • Trouble Communicating – Even just one missing tooth can completely change your speaking patterns, making it more difficult to enunciate clearly.

The sooner you come to our office, the sooner we can explore the different tooth-replacement solutions that are available and restore your healthy, complete, and beautiful smile.

What Qualifies You for Dentures?

At your initial consultation, we’ll review your dental history, take the necessary X-rays, and complete a visual exam. If you’re struggling with moderate to severe tooth loss, but your gums are healthy, then there’s a good chance that dentures are the right solution for you. If that’s the case, then we will move on to the next step of the process: creating your custom treatment plan.

Important reminder: There are some cases where patients aren’t candidates right away. For instance, if there is an active infection in your gums or one of your natural teeth has decayed beyond the point of repair, then we will need to provide the necessary restorative care before we can begin the process of making your custom denture.

Alternative Tooth-Replacement Options

Dentures are not your only choice when it comes to tooth replacement. Not only that, but there are some cases where we don’t recommend them. For instance, if you are only missing one tooth, then your dentist in Hackensack can rebuild the strength of your bite and the appearance of your smile with:

  • A Dental Bridge – If you are missing one tooth (or up to four teeth consecutively), we can fill the open space with a dental bridge. This restoration is durable, lifelike, and can last for over a decade with proper care.
  • A Dental Implant – This tooth-replacement solution is unique because it can replace both the root and the crown. Not only that, but it has the longest lifespan, with many patients enjoying theirs for 30+ years.

Types of Dentures

Every patient has a unique situation to consider. As such, there are different kinds of dentures that we might suggest based on your circumstances. We’ll explain the advantages and disadvantages of each option before you have to make a choice, and a cost estimate will be provided as part of your initial consultation.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures have a gum-colored acrylic base that supports a specific number of prosthetic teeth. Each partial denture is carefully designed to fill in any existing gaps in your mouth. This type of restoration is held in place with clasps, and it can easily be removed when it’s time to clean it.

Full Dentures

Naturally, full dentures are often recommended when all of your teeth are missing or when there aren’t enough healthy teeth worth keeping in an arch. Full dentures rest directly on your gums, creating powerful suction that keeps them anchored in place. Just like partial dentures, traditional full dentures can be taken out of the mouth at any time.

Implant Dentures

An implant denture is attached to the jawbone via carefully placed implant posts. The exact number of posts needed varies from patient to patient. While implant dentures can be removable, oftentimes they’re designed to stay in the mouth 24/7, meaning you’ll brush and floss them as if they were your natural teeth.

The Benefits of Dentures

Dentures have a long history of helping people enjoy full smiles again, and they continue to be highly recommended by dentists to this day thanks to the many advantages they offer, such as:

  • Restoring your bite and the ability to eat a variety of nutritious foods.
  • Allowing you to speak clearly.
  • Lasting 7 to 10 years on average with proper maintenance.
